The short answer
Metro Vancouver tap water is soft and well treated, so the real complaints here are chlorine or chloramine taste, sediment and rust flakes shed by aging galvanized pipe, and the slightly acidic water that contributes to pinhole leaks in older copper. What's different about this job in the Tri-Cities
One correction worth making: Metro Vancouver water is very soft, so a water softener — the product people most often ask us for — is almost never what a home here needs. The genuine local issues are different. Chloramine used as a disinfectant residual affects taste and smell. Water from the regional supply is naturally low in alkalinity, which is why the water utility adjusts pH, and why aging copper in some homes still develops pinholes. And in houses with remaining galvanized steel pipe, the rust shedding off the inside of that pipe is the sediment you find in your aerators. Each of those has a different answer, so we diagnose before we quote.

Do I need a water softener in Coquitlam?
Almost certainly not. Regional water here is soft, so a softener adds cost, wastes water on regeneration, and solves a problem you do not have. If someone is selling you one for a Coquitlam address, ask them to show you a hardness test first.
Will a filter fix my discoloured water?
It depends what is colouring it. Sediment from a galvanized pipe responds well to filtration, though replacing the pipe is the real fix. Discolouration after a water-main flush usually clears on its own. We would rather test than sell you a cartridge.
How often do cartridges need changing?
Between six and twelve months for most whole-home carbon and sediment units, sooner if your flow rate drops noticeably. We can set a reminder schedule and handle it as a routine visit.
