The fastest home test: put a few drops of food colouring in the tank, wait twenty minutes without flushing, and check the bowl. Colour in the bowl means the flapper is leaking. How do you find a leak inside a wall without opening it up?
By elimination. We isolate zones at the valves and watch the meter, use a moisture meter to map where the material is wettest, and listen acoustically at the pipe. That narrows it to a small area, so we open the smallest opening that lets us make the repair.
Water is coming through my ceiling right now. What do I do first?
Shut off the main water valve, then cut power to that area at the breaker if the water is anywhere near a fixture or light. Put a container under it and call us. Do not poke the bulge in the ceiling — a controlled release beats an uncontrolled one.
Is a dripping tap really worth calling about?
A drip a second is roughly 15 litres a day, but the better reason is what it signals: a worn seat or cartridge that will eventually fail open. Rebuilds are inexpensive when scheduled and expensive when they are an emergency.
