There is a real difference between clearing a drain and cleaning one. A cable auger punches an opening through the blockage — water moves again, and you call someone back in four months. Hydro-jetting scours the full inner diameter, taking the grease and scale off the pipe wall so the line returns to its actual capacity. Is drain cleaner from the hardware store a bad idea?
Generally yes. Caustic drain products often stall partway down and sit against the pipe, which is hard on older cast iron and dangerous for whoever opens the trap afterwards. If you have already poured some in, tell us — it changes how we open the line safely.
How often should a main line be cleaned?
If your line has roots or a known belly, an annual or biennial preventive jetting is far cheaper than an emergency backup. A sound line with no history does not need scheduled cleaning.
Can you clear a drain without a cleanout?
Usually, by pulling a toilet or accessing through a vent stack. It adds time, and it is a good argument for having a proper cleanout installed while we are there.
